Chiang Mai is Thailand’s major center for quality handicrafts. Most of the handcrafted products you can find in markets in Bangkok and other areas of the country were in fact made here in Chiang Mai. Popular products include: Cottons and Silk, Umbrellas, Pottery, Lacquerware, Woodcarving and Silverware. Umbrellas  Bo Sang village has a long tradition of manufacturing umbrellas. Here you’ll find umbrellas of various designs, colors and sizes. All materials, silks, cottons, Sa paper (manufactured from the bark of the mulberry tree) and bamboo are produced or found locally. Cottons and Silk  Thai silk is world renowned and the best place to go shopping for silk in Thailand is in Chiang Mai. San Kamphaeng Cotton & Silk Weaving Village is the major source of all Thai silk and cotton produced in Chiang Mai. A wide selection of high quality but inexpensive silk and fabrics can be found here. Pottery  Celadon, the unique Thai ceramic in soft green and blue tones, is produced locally in elegant designs. Items include dinner sets, lamp bases and many other decorative items. Many factories are located in the Hang Dong area. Lacquerware  The Chiang Mai area is well known for creating Thai lacquerware with its striking black and gold designs. A wide variety of lacquerware objects are produced, including trays, boxes, baskets, rice bowls and alms bowls. Factories and shops can be found along San Kamphaeng and Chang Klan Roads. Woodcarving  Woodcarving is a traditional northern Thai art which can be seen on many Thai temples. In recent years it has been increasingly used to decorate furniture, tableware and other decorative items. Ban Tawai Village in Hang Dong is a major centre of furniture making and woodcarving. Silverware  In Chiang Mai the traditional skills of producing the finest Thai silverware have been passed from generation to generation. A guaranteed content of at least 92.5 % pure silver is a mark of their quality. There are plenty of silver shops in Chiang Mai, many of them located on Wua Lai Road.
