Chiang Mai Trekking

Trekking has long been regarded as one of the “must do” activities when visiting Chiang Mai. The beautiful and mountainous nature, the many hilltribes and the pleasant climate attract travelers from all over the world to come trekking in Chiang Mai.

TrekkingChiang Mai has numerous tour companies offering a variety of trekking programs, normally lasting 1-3 days, but longer treks are also available. Sometimes it can be hard to choose which tour company to go with, so the best way is to ask other travelers about their trekking experience and if they can recommend the company they went with.

Elephant TrekkingThe typical trekking itinerary consists of hiking (of course), elephant riding, visiting a few hilltribe villages, one or more waterfalls, traditional Thai meals and floating down the river in a bamboo raft. Most tour companies will have their own itinerary, so ask around to find one that offers the activities you’re looking for.

Hilltribe VillageVisiting hilltribe villages is for many the highlight of their trekking adventure. There are many hilltribes living in the mountainous districts surrounding Chiang Mai, with the major tribes being Karen, Lahu (Musur), Hmong (Meo), Lisu, Akha and Mien (Yao). The hilltribe people are agricultural; planting fields, raising animals, and hunting for a living. Each tribe has its own culture and language.
